Never even heard of the guy but I’m familiar with his work. Long time Dead counsel Hal Kant has passed away according to Billboard Magazine. Hal was responsible for making the band “millions” of dollars over his 35 years with the group. Most notably, he made sure that in the hey-day of bands giving up their publishing rights in the 60′s and 70′s (did it ever stop)?, that the Dead always retained control of their music. A great man indeed.

Without him, the Dead’s music could be in the hands of a much more sinister company than Rhino, and that’s a great, great thing. Thanks Hal!

Hal Kant passed away on October 19th at the age of 77 of pancreatic cancer.
